For Both Robotics Surgery and Urolift

Ananth Annamraju, MD

If your doctor tells you that you need surgery, you might feel worried. Will you be in pain? How long will you be out of work? When can you go back to your morning jogs? The good news is that Urological Specialists of Ohio (USO) is raising the bar in the operating room. We’ve been designated a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), an independent, nonprofit, patient-safety organization and the leading administrator of quality improvement and accreditation programs for surgeons and hospitals around the world.

At the Institute for Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery, highly skilled, board-certified surgeons use robotic technology which involves smaller incisions, and offers greater accuracy and precision than ever before. Most patients experience less pain, decreased risk of infection, and a dramatically faster recovery. A quantum leap for both men and women, robotic surgery is used across a broad spectrum of specialties at USO. It’s significantly improved outcomes and recovery for many diagnosed with benign or malignant colorectal, urological, gynecological and thoracic conditions, among others.

A Trailblazer in Robotics and Surgery

When Ananth Annamraju, MD, graduated from medical school, open surgery with large incisions and sutures was the norm. Minimally invasive surgery— using small incisions, a long, thin camera and tiny surgical instruments—didn’t exist.

Robotics is the next frontier within minimally invasive surgery, and Dr. Aj is a pioneer.

In a typical procedure, Dr. Annamraju and his highly skilled team start at the patient’s bedside. The Da Vinci® robot is then docked into proper placement and Dr. Annamraju moves to the surgeon’s console from which he controls everything with unprecedented visualization and precision. The robot gives him four arms instead of two. The high-definition camera provides 3D visualization of the operating site, at a level in which traditional 2D laparoscopy simply can’t provide. He uses a set of master controls, and each move is precisely replicated by the robot. Flexible “wristed” instruments boost the surgeon’s ability to preserve healthy tissue.

Urology Specialists of Ohio is one of only two centers in Ohio designated ‘A Center of Excellence’.

The award means Dr. Espinosa has achieved a high level of training and experience with the Urolift System and has shown a commitment to exemplary care for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The classic alternative for those patients has been surgery that cuts, heats, or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While that surgery can very effectively relieve symptoms, it can also result in permanent side effects, such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

Five-year data from a randomized study showed that after five years, patients treated with the UroLift System continued to have relief from their symptoms with minimal side effects, and few patients needed an additional procedure. A second randomized clinical trial, called BPH6, showed that the UroLift System worked well when compared with the reference standard surgery and was better than the standard surgery at preserving sexual function and providing a quicker recovery period.

Dr. Espinosa, who joined Urology Specialists of Ohio in 2007, is board certified in urology.

He completed his undergraduate and medical school at the University of Texas and residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospital.

Dr. Espinosa is a member of the American Urology Association and the Clark County Medical Society.

Dr. Espinosa is proficient in the treatment of diseases affecting the prostate, bladder, kidney, and genitourinary system. He has additional expertise in issues relating to female pelvic organs and incontinence.
