Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that can form in the kidneys. While small stones may pass unnoticed, larger stones can cause severe pain, blood in the urine, and blockages that affect kidney function. At Urology Specialists of Ohio, we offer various treatment options for kidney stones, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive procedure for removing large or complex stones.

What is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)?

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a surgical procedure used to remove large or complex kidney stones. Unlike traditional open surgery, PCNL utilizes a small incision in the back and a nephroscope, a thin lighted instrument, to access the kidney. Through the nephroscope, ultrasound energy or laser technology can be used to fragment the stones, and the fragments are then removed using a suction device.

Benefits of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

PCNL offers several advantages over traditional open surgery for removing kidney stones:

  • Minimally invasive: Smaller incision compared to open surgery, resulting in less scarring and discomfort.
  • Effective for large stones: Can effectively remove large or complex stones that may not be suitable for other procedures.
  • Reduced recovery time: Typically shorter hospital stay and faster recovery time compared to open surgery.
  • Preserves kidney function: Minimizes damage to healthy kidney tissue.

Is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Right for You?

PCNL may not be suitable for all patients with kidney stones. Our urologists at Urology Specialists of Ohio will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if you are a potential candidate for this procedure. This evaluation may involve:

  • Medical history: Discussing your symptoms, medical history, and any past surgeries.
  • Physical examination: Including urinalysis, blood tests, and imaging tests (X-ray, CT scan, or ultrasound) to locate and assess the size and complexity of the stones.

The Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Procedure

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is typically performed under general anesthesia at Urology Specialists of Ohio. Here's a general overview:

  • A small incision is made in the back to access the kidney.
  • A thin nephroscope is inserted through the incision into the kidney.
  • Using ultrasound energy or laser technology, the stones are fragmented into smaller pieces.
  • The fragmented stones are then suctioned out of the kidney.
  • A stent may be placed in the ureter (tube draining urine from the kidney to the bladder) to facilitate healing and drainage of urine.
  • The incision is closed with stitches.

Recovery After Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

Following PCNL, you will likely stay in the hospital for a day or two for observation. Recovery time varies depending on individual factors, but most patients experience significant pain relief within a few days and can resume normal activities within a week or two. Your urologist at Urology Specialists of Ohio will provide specific post-operative instructions and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
