WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER?

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men. It begins with a cancerous group of cells (known as a malignant tumor) growing in the prostate. These cancerous cells spread to surrounding cells, destroying them. Left unchecked, and they’ll begin to spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body as well, causing great discomfort.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in front of the rectum just below the bladder. Its purpose is to make mucus and prostate fluid, one of the components of semen. Due to the location of the prostate, the first signs of prostate cancer include trouble with urination, blood in urine or semen, and other bladder related issues.

Just because you experience these conditions does not necessarily mean you have prostate cancer. However, they can serve as an early warning sign that you’re likely to develop it. The cells of the prostate can change over time, causing cancer-like systems even before malignant tumors have formed.

While prostate cancer can be successfully managed or completely removed once diagnosed, many older men have the condition without realizing it. 80% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are over the age of 65. However, 10% of cases occur in men younger than 55.

All men should start to have their prostate checked by age 50. For those with a history of prostate cancer in their family, checkups should begin by 45.
