SpaceOAR

Prostate radiation therapy is a common treatment for prostate cancer. While effective, radiation can have side effects, including rectal discomfort and inflammation. At Urology Specialists of Ohio, we offer SpaceOAR as an innovative option to help minimize these side effects and improve your quality of life during radiation therapy.

What is SpaceOAR?

SpaceOAR is a sterile, temporary hydrogel spacer that is inserted during a minimally invasive outpatient procedure to create a space between the prostate and rectum. This space reduces the high-dose radiation exposure to the rectum, potentially reducing the risk of side effects such as:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Increased urgency to have a bowel movement

Benefits of SpaceOAR

SpaceOAR offers several potential benefits for men undergoing prostate radiation therapy:

  • Reduced risk of rectal side effects: By creating a space between the prostate and rectum, SpaceOAR may help minimize radiation exposure to the rectum, potentially reducing the risk and severity of side effects.
  • Improved quality of life: Less rectal discomfort and inflammation can lead to a better quality of life during radiation therapy.
  • Preserves bowel function: Minimizing radiation exposure to the rectum may help preserve normal bowel function after treatment.

Is SpaceOAR Right for You?

SpaceOAR may not be suitable for all men undergoing prostate radiation therapy. Our radiation oncologists at Urology Specialists of Ohio will discuss your individual case and determine if SpaceOAR is a good option for you. This discussion may involve factors such as:

  • The stage and aggressiveness of your prostate cancer
  • Your planned radiation therapy dose
  • Your overall health and medical history

The SpaceOAR Procedure

SpaceOAR insertion is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure performed by a urologist at Urology Specialists of Ohio. Here's a general overview:

  • Local anesthesia is used to numb the area.
  • Using ultrasound guidance, the urologist inserts a thin needle through the perineum (the area between the scrotum and rectum) to place the SpaceOAR hydrogel spacer on either side of the prostate.
  • The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes.

The SpaceOAR Spacer During Treatment

The SpaceOAR spacer remains in place throughout your radiation therapy treatment. It will naturally dissolve and be absorbed by the body within 3-6 months after placement.

Recovery After SpaceOAR Insertion

Recovery after SpaceOAR insertion is typically quick and most men experience minimal discomfort. You will receive specific post-operative instructions from your urologist.
