UROLIFT – BPH RELIEF IN SIGHT

Urology Specialists of Ohio offers the UroLift® System, a minimally invasive procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a common condition in men as they age, enlarging the prostate gland and causing bothersome urinary symptoms.

What is BPH?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. As the prostate enlarges, it can squeeze the urethra, causing difficulty urinating.

Symptoms of BPH

Men with BPH may experience some of the following lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS):

  • Urinary urgency: A sudden and strong need to urinate
  • Urinary frequency: Needing to urinate more often than usual, including at night (nocturia)
  • Hesitancy: Difficulty starting urination
  • Incomplete bladder emptying: Feeling like you haven't emptied your bladder completely
  • Weak urine stream
  • Dribbling after urination

How Does UroLift® Work?

The UroLift® System is a minimally invasive procedure performed at Urology Specialists of Ohio to treat BPH. Here's a general overview:

  • You will receive local anesthesia or light sedation.
  • A small device is inserted through the urethra to visualize the prostate gland.
  • Tiny implants (UroLifts®) are placed under the prostate to hold open the blocked urethra, relieving pressure and improving urine flow.
  • The procedure typically takes less than an hour.

Benefits of UroLift®

The UroLift® System offers several advantages over traditional BPH treatments:

  • Minimally invasive: No cutting or heating of tissue.
  • Preserves sexual function: Unlike some BPH treatments, UroLift® does not involve resecting prostate tissue, which can help preserve sexual function.
  • Quick recovery: You can typically go home the same day.

Who is a Candidate for UroLift®?

UroLift® may be a suitable option for men with BPH who are experiencing bothersome urinary symptoms and are looking for a minimally invasive treatment approach. Enlarged Prostate

An enlarged prostate can narrow or even block the urethra.

Step 1

The UroLift Delivery Device is placed through the obstructed urethra to access the enlarged prostate.

Step 2

Small UroLift Implants are permanently placed to lift or hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way and increase the opening of the urethra. The permanent Implants are delivered through a small needle that comes out of the UroLift Delivery Device and into the prostate.

Step 3

The UroLift Delivery Device is removed, leaving an open urethra designed to provide symptom relief.
