Xiaflex® for Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's disease is a condition characterized by the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, causing curved, painful erections. This curvature can lead to difficulty with sexual intercourse and may cause significant psychological distress.

At Urology Specialists of Ohio, we offer the leading options in care, including Xiaflex®, to help men with Peyronie’s disease experience improved comfort, function, and confidence.

What is Xiaflex®

Xiaflex® is an FDA-approved medication for treating Peyronie's disease. It contains collagenase clostridium histolyticum, an enzyme that breaks down the buildup of collagen in the penis. This enzyme is derived from the bacterium Clostridium histolyticum and works by dissolving the plaque that causes the penile curvature associated with Peyronie's disease.

Is Xiaflex right for you?

If you have a palpable plaque and a curvature deformity of at least 30 degrees at the start of therapy, treatment with Xiaflex may be right for you. Our urologists will perform a comprehensive assessment to determine if Xiaflex is suitable for your specific case. Factors such as the severity of your symptoms, the degree of curvature, and overall health are all considerations. Our office will also discuss any post-treatment precautions, possible side effects or reactions, and when to call our office.

How is Xiaflex administered?

The administration of Xiaflex involves a series of injections directly into the plaque, causing the curvature. Typically, the treatment consists of up to four cycles, each comprising two Xiaflex injections and one penile modeling procedure. The injections are usually given 1 to 3 days apart, followed by the modeling procedure 1 to 3 days after the second injection. This procedure involves gently stretching and straightening the penis. The entire treatment course is typically completed over several months.

Benefits of Xiaflex for the treatment of Peyronie's Disease include:

  • Non-surgical option for treating penile curvature
  • Clinically proven to reduce curvature and related symptoms
  • Potentially improves sexual function and satisfaction
  • Minimal downtime compared to surgical interventions
  • Administered in-office
  • Can help alleviate the psychological distress associated with the condition
