What Does it Mean to be Board Certified?

At Urology Specialist of Ohio all our Doctors, physician assistants, and nurses are board certified. What does this mean?

The American Board of Urology is a governing body, separate from the State medical licensure system. “The mission of the American Board of Urology is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to insure the delivery of high quality, safe and ethical urologic care.”

To Become a Urologist you, of course, have to go through a significant amount of schooling which usually includes an undergraduate program, followed by medical school, and completed with a residency. This is typical to meet the minimum standards of a state licensure program.

Becoming board certified is an additional and voluntary process that demonstrates a physician’s expertise. “Certification by the American Board of Urology (ABU) involves rigorous testing and evaluation designed and administered by leaders in the field. The certification process evaluates a urologist’s clinical skills based on education, examination, review of actual surgical cases, peer review, and other criteria.

As board-certified urologists, we strive to stay up to date on evolving knowledge and promote and practice the highest level of evidence-based guidelines and standards. It is what has helped us successfully care for our patients and exceed industry standards.
